Papertrail

Here we go!

A Quickie Cheat Sheet for Sorting your paperwork!!

Before you start:

Put on 80's disco music (or some other upbeat songs of your favorite era) but REMEMBER...too much wiggling and jiggling can be distracting...singing is not!

Place EMPTY Recycle bin at end of sorting table .

Clear out file cabinet. Ditch anything over three years old (check IRS.gov for reference.)

1. Lay out papers in stacks about three inches high (what you can hold comfortably in one hand) on a large, flat surface near the table you'll be working on. I suggest the counter top is where you pile the papers and the dining room table is the sorting area.

2. Take one stack at a time to the sort table.

3. Banking/financial statements in one area, sort by name. Personal. To Do. Bills. Receipts (save only if you need them for tax purposes or to return an item. Tax Return Documents. Medical/Healthcare. Memberships. Bills to pay. Etc.

4. Open all envelopes as you stack. Unopened solicitations should be recycled.

5. Organize papers from each categorized stack by placing most current on top (January, Dec, Nov, etc.) Process piles, one at a time.

6. Create file folders for current year. Label.

7. Place all organized current papers in file and place in file cabinet alphabetically.

8. Suggest past years are filed in a lower drawer with tax returns.

Have a glass of wine, bar of chocolate, or anything that says "CELEBRATE your job well-done!!"

**If you're not able to start, due to hyperventilation at the sight of your papers, CALL ME!!
