(Name and image was changed to protect her identity!)
Janet was incarcerated for eighteen months, reduced from a three year sentence, for drug trafficking. She was set to be released, with promise of a one bedroom apartment, a box of mishmash kitchen items, and a set of worn sheets for her twin bed.
This is what I was able to generate for her (I visited her new place just two weeks after delivery:)
A set of eggshell sheers falls lightly against the sills. A bountiful chartreuse vase, braced alongside the edge of a delicate glass table, holds some willows intact. Cheerful cookbooks, lie on their sides to grace the tidy shelf next to the bed, with a brilliant red quilt tucked in the corners. Huarache size 8 slippers peek out from underneath the dust ruffle, their gold trim glistens in the soft light of the exquisite reading lamp. The Turner print, bold and stunning brings a spark of profit to the room. The closet door is ajar, slender pants line up like soldiers, awaiting roll call. Several cotton blouses, sorted by color and length of sleeves, show a flavor of control. The shoe collection, line-up properly, toes all pointed and newly polished glean success. None of the footwear show signs of wear and tear, as expected. Chic belts take up space on either side of the doorway, brushing against a hanger of silk scarves, bunched smartly in figure 8's.
She appears to float a little from the anticipation of her new lease on the days ahead. Its as if she’s been plucked from the unsightly York County Jail to a beautiful cozy adobe in one blast of luck. Janet is in awe of her abrupt transformation. From the initial consultation, an interview that led her to the opportunity to select whatever she wanted from a vast array of goodies, still causes her to feel weepy and giddy. Sensations she hasn't experienced in quite some time, if ever, pour from her like melting butter off hot salmon. Her confidence, newly born in the last few weeks, has landed her a temp job at the payroll service.
