In the process of grazing through the kitchen cabinets, my client fell upon a purse she’d gotten, years ago, in a small village in Mexico. The side panel had torn - stuck on the side of a trailer and ripped the seam. She put it aside to mend. Three moves and twelve years later, glommed onto it as we ranked one item after another from the recesses of the den. "Why don’t you take it to the tailor on the corner, I suggested? When you pick it up, wrap it like a gift and give it to yourself for being so generous with some of your prized possessions!" She did just that. The tailor has a daughter just learning the business. He claims she isn’t particularly excited about the prospect of being an apprentice. However, on this day, my client arrived, with the purse in a small paper gift bag. When she pulled it out, the father turned to his girl and said “Here’s your first sewing project!” My client told her tale. Declared she’s making it a re-gift to herself, after all this time. She spoke of the village she had visited, and the people who were making the purses. The artistry and detail are incredible. Mothers and daughters work together, to generate these items for the tourists, supporting the community with the income. A few days later, the client showed-up to collect her purse. It was intact, with a little note attached:
“Mrs. _____________,
I want to thank you for the chance to sew this purse. While I was working on it, I thought a lot about the women who made it. My dad has been pushing me HARD, to learn his business. I’ve decided I want to learn from him and then help women and their daughters learn a trade like this.
Didn’t it turn out good?
Stephanie”
What a gift of a present!
