This is my favorite tip EVER!
1. Surprise the heck out of them.
Offer something over-the-top when you're working with a client. The other day, a client's cat jumped onto my lap (of course, I wore black pants and was instantly covered in sticky blonde fur.) His sharp nails dug into my leg and I screamed like a little girl who fell out of a tree, breaking a limb. My client apologized profusely. "Gordy needs a nail trim but has a fit going to the vet's office." It sounded as though she spewed this statement often.
"I can cut his nails, do you have a trimmer?"
In a matter of minutes, I cut the cat's nails and saved the day.
Now I'm not suggesting you have to be an expert with cats. I'm merely pointing out that I have this skill, realized the need, and pitched in to assist. No charge.
Candice asked how frequently the cat's nails should be cut and I said "I'll check them when I come over to work with you. I charge $25 for that service. Today's on me but I'm happy to do it for you in the future."
I can't ell you exactly how many times Candice mentioned the cat, his now trim nails, and how much she appreciates me.
I got a call from her neighbor the next day, requesting a nail trim for her cat. An email arrived from the apartment manager, asking if I wanted to put those nail trimming services in the next newsletter a few days later!
Consider what you can offer your client so as so take advantage of each and every skill you have.
2. Leave the space better than you found it.
As I work with clients, I tend to be in a space that may not be very conducive to what they want to accomplish in that area. As I provide my services, I shuffle things around to help them be more organized and effective. Of course, I always ask them if I can demonstrate. They see for themselves just how much better feels.
I don't leave things out. As I use them, I put them back where they belong. Trash and recycling is put in their proper receptacle. I leave an invoice in the proper basket or in box.
I pick up and take things away that are no longer needed.
3. Be the Resource Person
People have a lot of needs/desires in their lives; from financial education, money saving tips, household support like a repairperson, car care, assistance with kids, their health, community yoga classes, aging parents issues, challenges around family and so much more.
As things come up in the course of conversation, make a note of your resources, email or send them the text contact information. If it's an email introduction, state why you're connecting the two of them.
People appreciate the time and energy you put out to help them.
We are a community rich with resources and each of us has contacts in our circle that may be able to help. If not, they might know of someone else who can.
Plus, it's a benefit to send referrals to other business owners!
4. Create a ceremony for accepting your payment.
I have the client grasp one end of the payment (check or cash) while I take the other end. I then say "May this manifest for us both tenfold."
Now, my clients ask for me to do this little ceremony - it's such a feel-good! If I forget, they remind me!
And I'm a hugger. I ask the first time, if I can give them a hug. It's such a nice ending to time together!
5. Send a message of appreciation.
A cheerful thank you note, a colorful birthday card, sincere sympathy message, or holiday greeting go a long way. We love to get mail in the box that doesn't represent a bill or junk. A personal touch means so much since it isn't so common.
Clients are falling in love with you. They are thrilled when they see you. They're referring you to their family and friends. They brag about you and your business. Clients give you compliments, they greet you with a huge smile and show you their admiration.
Life is good.
Spread the word, share, comment, and experiment with the above. I appreciate each and every one of you.
Consider your Self hugged.
Thanks,
Paula
