My Four Top Tips for Meeting the Parents (halfway)

Going through your life's possessions is grueling. Let's face it, no one wants to sort their crap, figure out where it can go to good use, and organize the divving-up process.

It's tedious, painful, unhealthy (sometimes the goods get moldy, have dust, or sport little bugs that go everywhere,) not to mention joyous and happy memories pop outcome into play (God forbid!)

In the years of shoveling my share of shit (my own as well as others,) here are my favorite ways to help your loved ones sort it out.

#1 Bring ONE BOX each day to the table.

Mornings are best, when folks have the most energy and are well-rested, caffeinated, and the sun is shining.

#2 Take a handful of photos or papers at one time.

Toss, set aside for copies, save to disk. Put original in a folder or ziplock to hold onto for Celebration of Life.

#3 Take digital photos of items to give to family members or close friends.

Text or email the pics to each individual, give them a "by when" date of decision or it goes AWAY. Let them come up with a plan to collect the item(s.) A set date is a MUST.

#4 Enlist the help of other family members to be a part of this process.

It's charming, precious, full of laughter, and fond memories.

and a BONUS TIP:

#5 Take turns video-recording some of the sessions to share with those who can't be there.

It's best to be all-inclusive. For sometimes circumstances don't allow for the journey. You wouldn't want to be the one left out, eh?

Please comment, let me know which tip is your favorite and one you'll do with your parents or a close friend needing help with their stuff!

Thanks for reading, I do so appreciate your taking the time out for my shares.
